New Family Member

We have a new puppy. His name is Remy for Remington, he is a Newfoundland and he is 10 months old. We went and got him last Thursday, and he is adjusting well.

I was not too excited about getting a dog from a breeder when sooo many dogs need a home, but we tried to do something nice and it bit us in the ass.

A couple of months ago we went to a kennel and started to volunteer. We would go there and take a few dogs at a time for a walk. Since we love dogs, we decided that we could foster one. We brought home a 4 months old pit bull mix, because she was the sweetest thing. She was licking us like crazy and was really adorable. Once at home she met Louna, and she thought that she needed to prove to her that from now on, SHE was the boss. Every chance she had, she would just lounge on Louna and try to bite her...after the 2nd or 3rd time we decided that it was not going to work and we took her back to the kennel heartbroken. We decided that 2 female dogs were not going to work out.

Once at the kennel we met Marco, a male flat coated Retriever who had been at the kennel for way too long. He was actually a little indifferent to us at first, but we decided that we could give it a try. He got along great with Louna. In fact, Louna was the bitchy one (no pun intended!) The only problem we found was that he would not take any crap from any dog at the dog park. He would not attack, but if another dog would smell him the wrong way...he would let that dog know. Everything was going ok....until he got a hold of the cat. Cat was cornered, started to freak out, took off running, the dog runs behind...and gets a hold of it. I forgot to mention that the cat is really small, and the dog was about 90 to 100lbs. The poor cat ended up with a fractured pelvis.

I think that we can say that we gave it a try. If we didn't have Louna, I'm sure that the first dog would have worked out perfectly. If we didn't have a cat, I think that the second dog would have worked out fine. The reality is different, and we didn't want to risk it anymore. Yes Louna has been a little protective of her food with Remy, but other than that everything is going really smoothly.

I'm glad things are going well with Remy! Being a midwife or nurse midwife would be an amazing experience, I hope you go for it!!
Take care,
Katie
